The effect of dietary patterns on NAFLD diagnosed by biopsy or magnetic resonance in adults: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials and post hoc meta-analysis

The aim of our novel systematic review is to examine the effect of dietary patterns on changes in hepatic fat content, liver enzymes and metabolic syndrome components.

  • Dietary patterns might aid the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

  • We systematically reviewed the effect of dietary patterns on NAFLD progression.

  • The Mediterranean diet might be effective in reducing hepatic fat content.

  • The low-carbohydrate diet might be effective in reducing hepatic fat content.

  • Rigorous trials are needed to establish the most effective dietary pattern to manage NAFLD.
